Teaching and assessment for Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons)

This module will provide you with the mathematical skills and knowledge needed to handle an engineering degree course. It also aims to increase confidence in using and understanding mathematics.

Civil engineering involves the use of water and other fluids. You will explore the basic principles and discover the various applications of fluids and their mechanics.

You will gain an understanding of how liquids and gases behave, the forces that shape their movement, and how they interact with other objects.

In the rapidly evolving technological landscape, this module offers a gateway into understanding the fundamental principles of analogue and digital electronics. This course is not just about learning theories, but rather about comprehending the building blocks of the modern world.

You will learn the basic practical and theoretical background of obtaining stresses and deformations in structures and mechanical parts.

These are caused by various loading scenarios. These include bending, shear, and torsion.

Failure criteria of parts and structures as well as de-risking factors are also discussed in this module.

Industry engineers use modern engineering software, you will learn to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) and microcontrollers in IT labs.

Using CAD software to design products and manufacturing systems and develop your design skills by creating 3D models with SolidWorks. Learn how to make engineering drawings for manufacturing with AutoCAD.

You will learn about the key principles related to energy, work, power generation, and refrigeration.

You will learn concepts such as mass, and energy and work in the energy analysis framework. This will enable you to establish the most efficient engineering design strategy.

This module explores the basics of manufacturing and turning raw materials into a final product.

You will relate this knowledge to careers in technology, design, or engineering. This module will give you basic skills in manufacturing, and enable you to create your own designs and products in the future.

Now that you’ve settled into university life, it’s time to build on the foundations you set in your first year.

This second-year module is all about helping you take your development to the next level. This will cover this from a personal, academic, and professional perspective.

This is a core level 3 module of the BEng in Mechanical Engineering degree. This combines both a Career Management and an Enterprise theme. These themes will give you a real insight into the role of a Professional Engineer and the varied graduate pathways available.

Learn about a range of engineering materials.

This will include metals and non-metals, and their main properties.

This will also cover how these are influenced by composition and processing.

It also covers the design and selection of materials based on various engineering applications.

The Solid Mechanics module is designed to provide students with practical and theoretical background of obtaining stresses and deformations in mechanical parts due to various loading scenarios including internal pressure, rotation, and torsion.

This module explores the design and analysis of parts and systems, unleashing your creativity and problem-solving skills to design innovative solutions to real-world problems.

You will learn how to turn your ideas into tangible solutions, and gain skills that can be applied to engineering, technology, or even entrepreneurship.

Build on what you learned in EG21006. You will develop and expand your understanding of the main principles of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. You will also cover their applications.

Design considers ease of manufacture, fitness for purpose, and sustainable use of materials and energy. Engineers use various techniques to enhance designs, leading to cost savings.

The skills and experience gained in this industry project will equip you for future work in engineering.

Computer aided engineering is widely used in industry for prototyping and product development.

You will work with computer software to simulate real engineering systems and solve real-world problems, such as the design of concept vehicles and wind turbines.

This module builds on the foundations established in ME32001, developing and expanding your understanding of fluid mechanics principles and their application, as well as introducing a number of advanced topics.

Robotics and mechatronics are areas where engineering meets innovation. This module explores how to design, analyse, and control robots.

It will also equip you with the knowledge and skills to build machines that can think and act.

This module extends your knowledge on elementary theories, particularly geometry and mechanical and structural systems. It also covers a wide range of engineering materials and how their properties can be tailored and influenced by composition and processing.

The Honours Year Project module is an exciting opportunity for students to gain experience in planning, organising, and carrying out an independent practical project in one area of engineering.

The exact nature of each student’s experience will depend upon the subject matter of the particular project they choose to undertake.
