ME22001

This module will introduce an appreciation for manufacturing techniques and product fabrication methods through IT classes, taught lectures and practical design workshops. This is in combination with a practical workshop taught by industrial engineers at the Michelin Scottish Innovation Parc (MSIP) skills academy.

After completing this module, you will be able to understand different manufacturing techniques used in product development, from a critical perspective.  Similar products (e.g. aluminium and carbon fibre automotive chasses) are researched to compare and contrast different manufacturing processes; these differences often being attributed to product material selection.

The practical design and fabrication project allows you to work in a group and use computer aided design software (e.g. AutoCAD) to design a mechanical systems (e.g. mechanical clocks). You will use be able to assemble and test your clock designs, whilst overcoming issues (measurement error, fabrication tolerances, part modification, fastening design) that affect assembly and testing.

The skills academy will ensure that you develop practical skills welding, metal fabrication, tool design and manufacture that are required as an engineer working in industry.
