Teaching and assessment for Law (Scots) with Energy Law LLB (Hons)

Private law concerns the legal relationships between individuals. It can be divided into the law of persons, the law of property, and the law of obligations. 

In this module, you will learn about how contractual obligations are incurred, their content, and how the obligations are terminated. 

A constitution creates, empowers, and limits public authority.

Look at the various types of constitutions before studying the UK Constitution in detail.

Learn the unwritten nature of the UK Constitution, its sources and fundamental principles, and the relationship between the various bodies within the Constitution.

This module will provide you with knowledge and understanding of the most important crimes with which a person can be charged.

It will also cover relevant defences which may be offered to counter such charges, and the Law of Evidence.

You will learn about delict, i.e. how and when the law imposes obligations on people to not cause harm to others. 

Governments are granted various powers to manage the state and its citizens. However, these powers are not unlimited.

This module covers the mechanisms that control the government’s use of power and the procedures that allow citizens to seek redress when they are aggrieved by government action (or inaction).

This module explores the different property rights (known as the real rights) recognised in Scots Law. It covers what each real right is and how it is created, transferred, varied, and extinguished. Law relating to specific types of property, i.e. land and moveable property, will also be covered.

Learn different approaches to thinking about and working with law, to build upon your previous studies.

Consider how you can combine both to think about legal institutions, concepts and the discipline of Law in general.

In this module, we examine the main legal rules that affect our private lives as individuals and in our relationships with others.

You still study identifying, interpreting, and applying the law relating to personal identity, children, children and their parents, and adult intimate relationships.

Learn why the EU was founded, how EU Law is made and how it is interpreted by member countries.

You will also study, Human Rights, the Four Freedoms under EU law, and EU Internal Market.

This module explores the theoretical concepts and legal implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), cyberspace, data technologies, and other technologies.

It also covers existing legal responses and current and emerging technologies relevant to the legal field as well as their potential influence on future legal practice.

The module will help you develop the key employability skills required for success as a Law graduate.

You will take part in practical and interactive workshops to help you develop an entrepreneurial mindset and commercial awareness.

This covers a set of topical human rights issues in the UK.

This includes how the UK and Scotland implement our international human rights obligations. It also looks at how human rights law can address political, social, and economic problems. This also covers its relationship to other areas of law.

You will explore a number of contested areas in family law.

You will look at the relationship between the law’s recognition and regulation of family life and changing social attitudes and practices.

Employment Law covers many legal aspects of the employment relationship. This includes the legal status of different kinds of workers through to the end of the contract.

You will learn of the history of employment law to the present day. Plus how the law attempts to strike a balance between employers and employees.

This module examines the regulatory regime dealing with land use planning and development management.

Sustainable development is used as a theme throughout.

Learn aspects of Scottish criminal procedure. You will learn to analyse the development and reform of the criminal process.

You will learn some of the central aspects of criminal procedure including:

• adversarial and inquisitorial procedures
• theories of the criminal process
• evidential aspects
• the accused’s ‘right’ of silence
• the jury

When a private law dispute, whether a contract or child custody dispute, has an international element where should the proceedings be litigated?

What law should be applied to the issues requiring resolution?

When should an overseas judgment be recognised?

These are the issues we explore in Private International Law.

This module examines the difference between English law and Scots law in contract formation and interpretation. Learn about the concept of 'consideration' in English law.

The English Law of Equity and Trusts is formed of principles developed to enhance common law. This introduces an emphasis on fairness and justice. Trusts are legal arrangements where one manages assets for another's benefit.

This module covers how equity and trusts can help people, charities, and businesses manage property.

Provides an introduction to the principles of international criminal law. Also looks at the institutions designed to enforce it, and the substantive law of select international crimes. In addition, the module considers:

• key cases
• impediments to the prosecution of international crimes
• and the future of international criminal law

This module opens with the consideration of legal history and historiography. You will learn the significance of legal treatises in the development of both jurisdictions. You will cover several topics in Scots and English law from the eighteenth to the twentieth century.

The module will explore the legal basis for taxation, including:

• international tax
• devolution of tax powers
• and prevention of tax avoidance

It will examine taxes applicable to common legal transactions such as:

• transfers of wealth
• property transactions
• and income taxation from employment and self-employment

This module is an introduction to environmental law.

Given the breadth of the subject, you will study the life cycle of energy projects. This will demonstrate relevant legal principles and highlight key elements of environmental law.

This module covers the cultural context of law through diverse mediums i.e. film, TV, and art. It explores law, legality, and justice as general things rather than specific rules and principles of regulation.

Learn different approaches to thinking about and working with law, to build upon your previous studies.

Consider how you can combine both to think about legal institutions, concepts and the discipline of Law in general.

This module explores how energy, water, telecommunications, and digital platforms are regulated.

It also looks at how regulation interacts with competition law, looking at the law as it applies in the EU and the UK.

This module provides an overview of the most important areas of medical law. The module will cover topics such as:

• medical negligence
• medical ethics
• consent to treatment
• medical confidentiality
• treatment of infertility
• disability and bioethics
• and treating children

International law influences almost every area of daily life, such as:

• leisure
• travel
• commerce
• health and the environment
• personal liberty
• public safety
• and security

This module covers a range of topics to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of public international law.

You will learn about the interaction between theory and practice in company law.

Companies often encounter complex issues between their corporate constituent parts. Company law takes these into account when mitigating conflicts of interest between constituents.

Intellectual property (IP) law safeguards the products of human intellect. This includes trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. This explores concepts, principles, and rules in IP law. You will learn to summarise rules derived from cases. You will also learn to apply rules to new scenarios and analyse existing IP rules.

English property law has shaped the history of England and the UK. It tells us much about the distribution of power in society. This module will introduce you to significant theoretical debates about the nature of property. It also touches on the relationship between the public and private realms.

In this module, major topical issues in constitutional law will be analysed comparatively.

You will be introduced to various methodologies used in comparative constitutional law enquiry. You will also look at various classifications of constitutions. After this, you will move on to focusing on topical themes in the field.

Climate change now affects areas of law far beyond environmental protection alone.

This module looks at the relevant frameworks of legislation. This is examined across international, national, and local scales.

It also includes recent disclosure rules about the impacts of climate change on corporations.

The study of Roman law offers insights into legal history, foundations of modern law, and cross-cultural understanding.

This module introduces students to the history of Roman law and some aspects of Roman private law.

Street Law is a method of public legal education. It involves engaging with the public to promote legal awareness and understanding.

Work in groups to identify an area of unmet legal need. Then, under supervision, research the relevant law and policy, and deliver a presentation addressing the unmet need.

Discover space regulation through international and domestic frameworks, including its history and key treaties.

Topics cover the origin of Space Law, UK frameworks, space tourism rules, airspace boundaries, celestial body laws, and relevant jurisdictional issues.

The module aims to help Law students develop the key employability skills required for success as a graduate through practical and interactive workshops, providing them with an entrepreneurial mindset and commercial awareness to excel in their careers.

The module is offered to final-year students as an alternative to the Dissertation.

It enables students involved in external activities relevant to their degree (placements, legal internships, etc) to obtain academic credit for that work, after completing the requisite number of hours and then producing an appropriate critically reflective report.

• the laws which require governments to disclose information they hold to the public
• the laws which regulate the use of personal data
• and surveillance capitalism

Mediation is the theory and practice that occurs when using a neutral third party to reach a voluntary agreement between disputing parties.

The module mainly looks at mediation in the context of Scotland and England. Material from other jurisdictions, such as the USA is also used.
