Justice, Law & Human Rights (Advanced) module (LW41016)

You will learn about the mechanisms used to put human rights in place. You will also learn the theories that form the basis of human rights law. You will also look at how human rights impact policy and legislation.

The module includes looking at topics such as:

• the UN frameworks for human rights, and how these are put in place in the UK and in Scotland
• race and crime
• policing of protests

The module will also look at socio-economic rights such as:

• health and housing and how these should be put in place
• rights to a clean environment and drinking water
• business and human rights
• and modern slavery

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

• learn about topical human rights issues in the UK
• look at rights in the UK under different systems of law
• examine the gap between law and implementation when it comes to human rights
• understand the opportunities and challenges for improving human rights

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• effectively research new areas of law
• act as part of a group in solving legal problems

Assignments / assessment

• one applied assignment e.g. policy brief (40%)
• one analytical or reflective essay (60%)

This module does not have a final exam.
