This is an English support module for international business students. You will develop your academic English while working with material from your core business modules.

This module will help you develop a critical approach to reading texts and show that writing is vital to successful coursework. Understanding how to use sources appropriately with the correct conventions for referencing is also key.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • develop your language and composition skills to produce written and spoken work
  • promote a critical approach to reading texts and academic literature
  • develop an understanding of the relationship between reading and writing
  • begin to develop effective note-taking strategies and introduce appropriate methods of reference and citation

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • develop an academic argument with significant points and relevant supporting detail
  • critically choose information from several sources to support your position
  • correctly cite and reference from various sources
  • structure your writing at the sentence, paragraph, and whole-text level
  • participate in a professional English-speaking business environment

 

Assignments / assessment

This module is pass / fail (Coursework 100%).

Your coursework is a portfolio of tasks. You need to complete all the portfolio tasks to pass the module. (Failed tasks may be resubmitted). Detailed feedback is given by your tutor for each task.

This module does not have a final exam.

 

Teaching methods / timetable

The module will be delivered through lectures and tutorials.

You should expect a weekly 2-hour lecture focusing on elements of written academic English. You will have weekly 2-hour tutorials where you will work in small groups with other students on the module. As this is a small group, students are expected to participate and contribute each week.
