Teaching

Throughout Levels 1-4 you will engage in research, moving from assigned and specified activities or studies to more independent practical work.

Most modules at Levels 1 and 2 have two lectures and one tutorial or workshop each week, including online workshops.

At Level 3 you will have lectures each week and tutorials centring around coursework. At Level 4, teaching is in much smaller groups and our module options are based on the research expertise of our staff, and vary slightly from year to year.

In your final year a supervisor will oversee a dissertation project where you will apply your research skills.

The German modules in first and second year have four hours of tutorials each week. In third and fourth year this changes to two hours of language tutorial each week, plus 10 hours of lectures, seminars and viewings on German film, culture and society across the year.

The French modules in Levels 1 and 2 have four hours of tutorials each week. In Levels 3 and 4 this changes to two hours of language tutorial each week, plus 10 hours of lectures/seminars on French film, culture and society across the year.

In addition to language classes, you must attend regular film screenings or make appropriate alternative arrangements for viewing the films studied on the course.

Assessment

Assessments for the Psychology modules are carried out through coursework and exams, and vary in type and weighting from module to module.

Cognitive psychology is the study of mental processes such as perception, problem-solving, language, and memory, with a focus on how we process and interpret information.

This module provides in-depth information on core areas of cognitive psychology, e.g. auditory and visual sensory processing, attention, memory, problem solving, and learning strategies.

It covers psychopathology's history, theories, assessment methods, and diagnoses, including mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety, Autism Spectrum Disorder, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

This module covers a variety of statistical techniques based on correlation and regression, to be used in the analysis of research data.

You will learn to use advanced correlation techniques, simple and multiple regression, regression with categorical predictors, mediation analysis, and moderation analysis.

Apply all your knowledge as a Psychological researcher, choose a research topic, and work with an experienced supervisor to set up a study.

This module allows you to collect data, analyse it, and present your results in an original piece of writing - your dissertation.

This module focuses on the ways in which our social relationships, group memberships (e.g. family, friends), and socio-economic circumstances influence our physical and mental health. You will learn about the detrimental effects of negative relationships (e.g. child maltreatment, bullying) and the beneficial effects of supportive relationships (e.g. friendships) on health.

Metacognition represents the ability to reflect on and evaluate our knowledge, experiences, and behaviours. Metacognitive insight modulates learning, adaptive decision-making, error monitoring, and exploration behaviour.

This module explores current knowledge on neurotypical metacognitive processes, and metacognitive deficits associated with a range of neuropsychiatric symptoms and disorders.

Social cognition refers to the cognitive abilities that allow us to interact with other people, e.g. considering what other know, believe, and think.

This module explores adverse experiences in childhood and the subsequent developmental and mental health outcomes in children, young people, and adults.

It will also cover suitable interventions to improve outcomes for individuals with ACEs.
