You will master thoroughly the main structures of the French language. You will become familiar with key features of selected French-speaking cultures. This will allow you to communicate competently in French. You will be able to do this in a range of complex informal and formal situations.

This learning will be of use to you both in your personal and professional lives. You will work within the level of B1 to B2 of the Common European Framework for Languages.

You will communicate competently across the four language skills. These are listening, speaking, reading and writing. You will do so through learning the main vocabulary and grammatical structures of French. You will develop skills such as:

  • reading comprehension
  • advanced dictionary skills
  • formal letter writing
  • participating in interviews
  • debating

Examples of topics are:

  • education and student life
  • business and employment
  • current affairs
  • contemporary social and cultural issues

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • understand and apply competently a wide range of vocabulary and grammatical structures in French. This will show awareness of complex features of the French language system
  • use a concise bilingual English - French dictionary proficiently
  • use new technology appropriately in language learning
  • show considerable familiarity with contemporary French-speaking societies and cultures. You will be able to show awareness of differences between customs and conventions in these societies and those in the UK
  • listen to, read, speak, and write French effectively, and with attention to detail, in a range of complex formal and informal contexts
  • use a wide range of printed, audio-visual, and web-based resources
  • use language skills at a level of B1 in all areas and selected skills areas of B2, as described in the Common European Framework for Languages

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • show competence in complex features of the French language. This will be across the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • show a high level of familiarity with key features of selected French-speaking cultures
  • communicate competently in French, and with attention to detail, in a range of complex formal and informal situations

  • grammar (10%)

To pass the module, both the total written and oral components of the coursework must be passed.

This module does not have a final exam.
