In this module you will come to understand the main structures of the French language. You will become familiar with key features of selected French-speaking cultures. You will also learn to communicate competently in French in informal and formal situations of some complexity.

This learning will be of use to you both in your personal and professional lives. You will work within the range of A2-B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

You will learn to communicate competently across the four language skills. These are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You will learn to recognise, understand, and apply the main vocabulary and grammatical structures of French.

  • business and employment
  • geographical and regional differences

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • recognise, understand, and apply the main vocabulary and grammatical structures of French
  • use a concise bilingual English - French dictionary
  • use ICT appropriately in language learning
  • develop your skills in spoken exchange, e.g. telephone calls and oral presentation
  • show familiarity with contemporary French-speaking societies and cultures. You will also show an awareness of differences between societies and cultures and those of the UK
  • listen to, read, speak, and write French effectively in a range of more complex social and work-related contexts
  • use language skills at a level of A2-B1, as described in the Council of Europe Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR)

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • show competence in the French language across the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • show familiarity with key features of selected French-speaking cultures
  • communicate in French in social and work-related situations of some complexity
  • competently apply grammatical and lexical structures

  • grammar (10%)

To pass the module, both aggregate written and aggregate oral components of the coursework must be passed.

This module does not have a final exam.
