You will master thoroughly the main structures of the French language. You will become familiar with key features of selected French-speaking cultures. You will learn to communicate competently in French. You will be able to in a range of increasingly complex informal and formal situations.

This learning will be of use to you both in your personal and professional lives. You will work within the level of B1 to B2 of the Common European Framework for Languages.

You will learn to recognise, understand, and apply the main vocabulary and grammatical structures of French. This will allow you to learn to communicate competently across the four language skills. These are listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Examples of topics are:

  • environment and tourism
  • media and publicity
  • historical events
  • political structures

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • recognise, understand, and apply competently the more complex features of the French language system
  • use a concise bilingual English - French dictionary effectively
  • use new technology appropriately in language learning
  • show increased familiarity with contemporary French-speaking societies and cultures. You will also be able to show awareness of differences between customs and conventions in these societies and those in the UK
  • listen to, read, speak, and write French effectively in a range of increasingly complex social and work-related contexts
  • conduct independent investigation and project work in French. This will involve using a range of printed, audio-visual, and web-based resources
  • use language skills at a level of B1 in all areas and selected skills areas of B2, as described in the Common European Framework for Languages

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • show competence in the more complex features of the French language. This will be across the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • show increased familiarity with many key features of selected French-speaking cultures
  • communicate competently in French. This will be in a range of increasingly complex informal and formal situations
  • show the ability to conduct independent investigation and project work in French

  • coursework (75%)
    • oral (25%)
    • written (30%)
    • grammar (20%)
  • exam (25%)
    • this will consist of one 10-minute oral degree exam

To pass the module, both the total written and total oral components of the assessment portfolio ( written 50%, oral 50%) must be passed.
