Research degrees in Law
We are one of the top law schools in the UK and home to world-leading research. Our academics are authors of core textbooks, and many have leading reputations within their field.
We offer two research degrees:
LLM by research
The LLM by research is a one year research degree. You write a 30,000-40,000 word thesis on an area of law or legal theory of your choice.
PhD degree
The PhD is a three year research degree. You write an 80,000-100,000 word thesis on an area of law or legal theory of your choice.
Supervision
The School of Law offers supervision for research degrees in most subject areas of the law and supports a variety of legal research methods, from doctrinal to socio-legal, comparative and historical research. Detailed information on the areas of law in which the School offers supervision is found on our research page. Individual staff pages also contain details of the areas of law in which each academic is willing to offer supervision.
