Visiting academics

The School of Law provides visiting opportunities to academics, professionals and research students who work in relevant discipline areas from other institutions in the UK and abroad. The aim of the Visiting Researcher Schemes is to facilitate effective exchange of ideas and interaction amongst like-minded researchers and provide a stimulating environment for academic and professional development.

The School provides opportunities for three categories of visitors:

  • Academics and professionals
  • Junior researchers
  • Short research visits

Academics and professionals

The School welcomes a number of visiting academics and professionals from a wide range of backgrounds every year. We particularly encourage visitors whose research plans fit in with our research themes. We offer a flexible visiting scheme of up to three months duration. In exceptional cases visits of a longer duration may be considered.

Such visitors are provided with office space with computing facilities, access to the library and online resources and a University e-mail address. The School charges a monthly bench fee of £350.00 to cover its costs.  Visitors will have to arrange their own accommodation and cover all expenses related to their visit.

Depending on the nature of the visit an additional one-off payment may be requested to recognise the expertise, time and commitment by the host academic.

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications at least three months prior to their preferred time of visit.

Junior researchers

The School also welcomes a small number of visiting junior researchers, especially outstanding young scholars and students working towards their doctoral degrees or who have just completed their PhDs and are writing their theses in the form of monographs and/or articles. Junior researchers will be encouraged to interact actively with School staff and students, including active participation in any doctoral research seminars and events.

Visiting junior researchers will be matriculated as non-graduating research students and provided with:

  • university computing facilities
  • access to the University Library
  • access to online resources
  • a university e-mail address
  • access to university's Generic Skills Programme
  • access to the visiting lecture series

The School charges a monthly bench fee of £350.00 to cover its costs.

Visitors will need to arrange their own accommodation and cover all expenses related to their visit. Please note that the University uses a Pay-2-Print service for all printing and photocopying.

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications at least three months prior to their preferred time of visit.

Short research visits

Researchers may also want to visit the School for a week or less in which case they will be asked to pay a bench fee of £200 to cover registration and administrative costs.

UKVI

The Standard Visitor Visa has now replaced the Business Visitor Visa, which included visas for academics.

Organisation

The Research Administrative Lead, Paula Francis is the administrative point of contact and should be involved in discussions in a timely manner to enable operational matters to be put in place prior to the arrival of the visitor.
