We have a large choice of PhD opportunities with supervision from experts in their field.
Most of our PhDs are designed to be completed in three years for full-time students and five years for part-time students. However, some of our PhD programmes take four years full-time, as specified in the programme name.
Programmes and partnerships
We offer doctoral training programmes across a wide variety of areas. These are structured interdisciplinary programmes with full funding. Some include taught components or internships, and all offer specialised training and development opportunities.
Masters by Research
A Masters by Research degree is a Masters-level qualification based around an independent research project rather than lecture attendance and examinations.
The Masters by Research takes one year full-time or two years part-time, which makes it a great option if you are interested in a PhD but want a taste of academic research before committing, or if you would like to develop an advanced level of knowledge in your area and learn key techniques to enhance your career.
We currently have the following Masters by Research options:
Developing your own research proposal
We welcome enquiries from prospective postgraduate researchers who are developing their own research proposal. Before you apply, you are strongly advised to explore our research areas thoroughly and to approach your potential supervisor(s) to discuss your plans - you will only be able to undertake a research degree with us if we can offer appropriate supervision.
International postgraduate researchers
We welcome applicants from all over the world. Enrol with us and you will join a community of outstanding academics. We are among the top 50 in the world in the 2020 edition of the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings. 76% of research rated as `world-leading’ or `internationally renowned’ and part of them addresses issues of global significance.
