Best practice for supervisors
All postgraduate researchers at the University of Dundee deserve high-quality supervision and a productive relationship with their supervisory team
The Doctoral Academy supports academics in developing their supervisory skills and exploring best practice.
Expectations of supervisors
The roles and responsibilities of main supervisors, second supervisors, and postgraduate researchers at the University of Dundee are laid out in full in Section 3 of our Quality Code.
Supervisors should also be aware of the UK Council for Graduate Education’s Good Supervisory Practice Framework.
The University of Dundee offers training and refresher workshops for supervisors.
Training themes include supervision regulations and protocols, supervisor roles, giving feedback, management and administration, the role of student support, mental health and wellbeing resources, and equality and diversity.
Research integrity training
As of the 2020-21 academic year, completion of the online research integrity staff course (Responsible and Ethical Practice in Research and Publication) is mandatory for supervisors.
Resources for supervisors
Support Smart is the University of Dundee’s toolkit on student support for academics. It covers the support services available for your students, personal development and essential skills, wellbeing and health, what to do if you’re concerned about a student, how to report abuse or misconduct, and handling emergencies.
A number of institutions publish and compile best practice resources for supervisors of research students.
