Our English for International Students courses are accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK

Pre-sessional courses

If you have not yet met the English entry requirements for a degree course at the University, we offer summer and autumn pre-sessional programmes.

In-sessional courses

If you have met the English entry requirements for your course, but you would still like to improve your written and spoken English, we can help.

We offer ‘in-sessional’ classes you can attend at the same time as your studies, in:

  • academic writing
  • academic speaking
  • academic listening and note-taking
  • language forum
  • vocabulary building
  • seminar skills
  • grammar review

The best time to join is in your first semester, and students usually choose one or two classes.

These classes are open to all students and staff whose first language is not English.

Drop-in sessions

If you are an international student with questions about Academic English, come to one of our individual drop-in sessions.

We can help with:

  • language and structure of information in coursework or a dissertation
  • exam preparation and writing exam answers
  • grammar
  • pronunciation
  • academic reading
  • vocabulary
  • presentations

We are also happy to provide general language advice.

These sessions will be available once we are able to offer on-campus teaching.
