Discover your societies

Because uni isn't just about the academic life...

On this page

Sure, every uni has societies - but what makes ours so good? Well, how about a great mix of interests and activities, smaller groups so you can really get to know people, and loads of events happening every week on and off campus?

You can check out the full list of societies on the Dundee University Students' Association (DUSA) website, but here are some of our faves...

For book lovers πŸ“š

Join the Jane Austen Society, the Creative Writing Society, or the OG Book Society.

For fitness fanatics 🧘

You've got Yoga, Aerial, Participation (where every week is a different activity), and dance societies.

For musicians 🎸

We've got Big Band, Opera and Musical Society (OpSoc), Traditional Music, and DEMS - Dundee Electronic Music Society.

For culture and religion 🌍

We've got international societies like our Indian, Malaysian, and African Caribbean societies, and we also have religious societies like the Christian Union, Islamic Society, and Jewish Society.

5 reasons to join a society

1 - Meet new friends πŸ˜€

It's pretty obvious, but friends usually have shared interests... so what better way to meet new BFFs than joining a group where you're all interesting in similar things?!

2 - Get away from the textbooks πŸš€

Uni life is quite rightly centred around your studies... but that doesn't mean it has to be the only thing you focus on. Societies are the perfect way to get out of the classroom and take a break from the books.

3 - Help build campus community ❀️

One of the great things about studying at Dundee is the campus vibes - we're compact and close-knit, so you get a real sense of community when you're on-site. Societies help build that community feel, so by joining one, you're helping build a great campus experience for yourself and everyone around you.

4 - Get support (or help support others!) 🀝

For loads of people starting at uni, it's the first time they've lived away from home and from friends and family. Being part of a society means you have a ready-made group of people who can help show you around, give you advice, and make that transition a little easier - and, in time, you'll be able to support others making the move to uni!

5 - Boost your CV ✍️

OK, so it's probably not the first thing on your mind when joining a society, but they sure look good when you're trying to pad out your CV. Especially if you decide to take on leadership or organisational roles, they can be a great way to develop skills and give you experience in working with others.
