No
Black History month 2024 banner
Black History Month

This event is a collaboration between researchers at The University of Dundee and the British Academy Early Career Researchers Network. It aims to bring early career researchers (ECRs) together to celebrate the contributions of researchers from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds. The event will also provide an opportunity to ECRs to explore possibilities for collaborative research in different fields.

The event will include:

  • Lightning talks where BAME-researchers will share their research, research interests or their contributions in teaching, community engagement or other activities. The purpose of these talks is twofold:
    1. to celebrate diverse contributions of BAME- ECRs; and
    2. to share the expertise and interests of the event participants for further collaboration.
  • Keynote speeches by BAME academics including Prof. Chakravarthi Ram-Prasa FBA. The focus of the keynotes will be on career progression strategies and opportunities for BAME-ECRs.
  • Small-group sessions to discuss potential collaborative research projects. Considering the focus of the event, the participants will be encouraged to think about challenges faced by BAME- ECRs and plan at least ONE research project on issues related to BAME-ECRs. The event organisers will facilitate these sessions. The participants might apply for some seed funding to execute their draft research project (the outcome of the session).

The target audience for the event includes Early Career Researchers (ECRs) interested in expanding their professional network. Refreshments and lunch will be provide. We would are inviting submissions for the lightening talks.

If you would like to present, please, send us the title and abstract (up to 150 words) of your talk to [email protected] by 30 September 2024

Note as this event is in collaboration with the British Academy (BA), if you are interested in attending and are not currently a BA member, you will need to register to become a BA ECRN member. Registration is free.

Dundee’s history is inextricably woven into the story of Empire. Connections with the Caribbean and South Asia provided the basis for much of Dundee’s wealth, while many living in the city today came from previously colonised countries to make Dundee their new home. Join the organisers of a new exhibition exploring this topic for an informal guided tour.

Portrait of Robert Wedderburn
Black History Month

2024 marks the 200 year anniversary of the publication of Robert Wedderburn’s antislavery memoir The Horrors of Slavery (1824).

Robert's mother Rosanna was an enslaved woman on Jamaica; his father James was part of the Wedderburn family which played a significant role in the life of Dundee. We are therefore hosting a series of events to highlight Robert Wedderburn as a crucial figure in transatlantic radicalism, insurrectionism, and abolitionism, exploring not only his works and their importance but his broader social, political and cultural contexts. Beyond the individual, we will also explore the resonances of such themes in the 200 years since publication.

We welcome members of the university community and wider public to be a part of the conferences’ two keynote addresses:

Friday 27 September, 9:00 -11:00

Robert Wedderburn and Black Radicalism. This keynote lecture from award-winning historian Professor Hakim Adi is a public-facing historical lecture which places Wedderburn in the historical context of 'Black Radicalism' in Britain. This will outline the significance of Robert in relation to key figures such as Olaudah Equiano, Catherine Despard, and William Davidson, amongst others.

Comrades of colour: making alliances to make change across the Black and Red Atlantic. This keynote lecture from award-winning journalist Professor Gary Younge is a public-facing lecture which considers the resonances of a figure like Wedderburn in the present day. Given Wedderburn's combination of anti-slavery and working-class activism the lecture will explore the meanings of making alliances.
