Philosophy courses
Philosophy courses at the University of Dundee, specialising in the European and Continental philosophy tradition
Ask the fundamental questions about knowledge, existence, ethics, and meaning, in a department that specialises in European (Continental) philosophy. You can study philosophy as your main degree or combine it with another subject, including the only course in Scotland to pair fine art with philosophy.
What is European (Continental) philosophy?
Continental philosophy is the tradition that grew out of mainland Europe, concerned with human existence, meaning, culture, and society. It includes movements such as existentialism and phenomenology, and thinkers like Nietzsche, Sartre, de Beauvoir, and Deleuze. It's often contrasted with the analytic philosophy dominant in most English-speaking universities, which leans more towards logic and language. Dundee is one of the few UK departments to specialise in the Continental tradition, so you study these thinkers and ideas in depth.
Undergraduate Philosophy courses
Both of our Philosophy degrees reflect the department's specialism in the Continental tradition. You'll study the same philosophy modules on each of these degees, but for European Philosophy, you are encouraged to study European-based modules from other subjects such as history, languages, international relations, politics, or geography.
