The Art and Philosophy degree at Dundee combines creative practice with critical inquiry. This encourages you to explore how ideas can transform art, and how art can generate new ways of thinking.

Working alongside practicing artists and philosophers, you'll develop your own creative practice. You will engage with some of the most important questions facing contemporary society.

Rather than simply studying theories about art, you'll be invited to philosophise with and through your artworks. This means exploring questions such as:

  • Can art practice transform the way we think about the world and each other?
  • Is art itself a form of thinking?
  • How can artworks and exhibition spaces become homes for reflection and public debate?
  • How can bringing art and philosophy together matter for pedagogy or politics?

Throughout the degree, you will learn about the history of ideas in dialogue with contemporary art and your own studio practice.

You'll develop skills in critical reflection, discussion and critique. You will bring art and philosophy together in experimental, creative ways.

Dundee's Philosophy course is unique in Scotland for its specialism in European philosophy. You'll encounter thinkers such as Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre, Beauvoir, Foucault, Butler and Haraway. You will also engage with non-Western traditions.

Drawing on this rich intellectual history, you'll have the opportunity to develop creative and critical work in response to issues that matter to you. These can include AI, climate justice, mental health, colonialism, and gender and sexuality.

Alongside your studies, you'll have the freedom to experiment across a wide range of media using our specialist studios, workshops and technical facilities. This includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, film, installation, performance, sound, and digital making technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting.

You'll exhibit your work throughout your studies, culminating in the final-year Degree Show. At Dundee, Art and Philosophy is not something you learn about. It is something you do: on the page, in the studio, and in the world.

“There was a great mix of both the practicality of art-making, as well as the academic writing and conceptuality behind art. It may seem like a really strange collaboration but you soon learn of the plentiful crossover within the otherwise separate fields. I feel it has really matured my artistic practice.”
