Sports Union Executive Elections 2026
The University of Dundee Sports Union Executive is made up of seven volunteers and one full-time paid sabbatical officer, the Sports Union President.
Serving on the Sports Union (SU) is a very rewarding experience. You’ll be helping to sustain our lively club culture to transform lives through sport, exercise and physical activity. As well as having a positive impact on sport, you will gain valuable experience and skills over the year.

Key dates
- Nomination period begins: Monday 12 January (after Council)
- Deadline for applications and manifesto*: Monday 09 February at 17:00
- Campaigning starts: Monday 09 February at 17:00
- Hustings: Monday 02 March (after Council)
- Voting opens: Monday 02 March at 19:00 (after Hustings)
- Voting closes: Sunday 15 March at 17:00
- New President and Executive announced: Monday 16 March at 10:00 (meet at 09:30 for announcement)
*Candidates should write a manifesto outlining their key intentions and aims should they be elected. There is a 250-word limit. We ask all candidates to use this space to present their aims and objectives clearly and for consistency we request that candidates stick to the provided word count. The Sports Union will discuss and review manifestos before publishing and you will be made aware of any changes that need to be made if it does not meet the requirements. Please also provide a headshot or graphic for social media promotion.
Executive Positions
All members of the Executive shall hold office for one year (starting from the 1st of July on par with President’s term of office).
Sports Union President
The Sports Union President represents the students’ voices. They will represent the students in all aspects and is there to provide support and guidance and to be the first line of call for any student that needs to contact the SU.
The role of the SU President is a full-time position that represents the voice of the SU students and is responsible for the development of sport at the university. The SU President oversees the day-today running of the SU and delegates, approves, and oversees the duties of the SU executive committee. Part of this is organising campus sport events, fundraising and the planning of Blues & Colours.
The SU President also represents the SU clubs on external bodies such as Scottish Student Sport (SSS) and British University and College Sports (BUCS). Within the University of Dundee, the SU President will also represent the SU on internal bodies such as the Students Representative Council (SRC), Student Experience Executive Committee (SEEC), as well as many university planning groups and liaison meetings.
The main duties are as follows:
- To chair all meetings of the Sports Union including; Council, Executive and Blues & Colours
- To generally oversee the day to day running of the Sports Union.
- To provide the highest level of representation for all Sports Union Clubs on bodies as determined by the University.
- To represent the University of Dundee on external bodies such as SSS Athletic Union Forum and Committees, BUCS Committees.
- To work in partnership with Sport and Active Health (SpAH) to further the provision and development of sport and exercise opportunities for students.
- To represent the Sports Union on the Dundee University Students' Association (DUSA) Students’ Representative Council.
- To represent the Sports Union at relevant university Meetings.
- To delegate, approve and support the organization of their executive and their duties. To exercise the powers and fulfil the duties of the Executive in an officer’s absence or failure to fulfil their duties.
- Record and keep private the decisions of the Blues and Colours Committee. Publish a list of awards granted.
- Co-ordinate with other Universities and SSS on the fulfilment of fixtures.
- Sit on any further SU Sub-Group Committees.
- Oversee the delivery of the University of Dundee’s Sports union aims and constitution ensuring proper policy and procedure.
- Maintain up-to-date records of the University of Dundee’s Sports Union constitution, alongside policy and procedure documents.
- Oversee club discipline issues.
- Support on the delivery of the varsity; Abertay V Dundee.
- Support on the delivery of the Sports Union Ceilidh/dinner (Sem 1) and Blues and Colours Ball (Sem 2).
- Support the delivery and development of Executive members.
- Work with DUSA to deliver and develop; student welfare initiatives (mental health) and representation (LGBT+).
- Responsible for supporting health and well-being initiatives run by SSS.
Vice-President of Sport
The VP of Sport helps organise the annual Varsity games with Abertay University. The VP of Sport also sits on the Blues & Colours committee and Finance committee in a voting capacity.
The main duties are as follows:
- The President will delegate the responsibility of organising the following events to the Vice President (Sport). The Vice President (Sport) must seek the approval of event plans from the President and then accept the responsibility for the delivery and success of these events.
- To sit on the organising committee for the Varsity Challenge against Abertay.
- Any other sporting event thought required by the Sports Union Executive.
- All of these events must be working towards the objectives of the Sports Union
- To exercise the powers and fulfil the duties of the President in that officer’s absence.
- To sit on the Executive and Blues and Colours Committees of the Sports Union in a voting capacity.
- To attend all sub-committees set up by the Executive and Council.
- The Vice Presidents will also be on hand to help executive members with their duties, along with being the next in line should the President require help or assistance.
- Attend all SU events and assist at these events at the discretion of the President.
- Attend any other relevant events and meetings at the discretion of the President.
- To assist the President and Administrative Secretary in collating all information for the Sports Union Handbook.
- To work in partnership with SpAH in the successful management and delivery of SU aims
Vice-President of Events
The VP of Events is responsible for the organisation and delivery of the SU events throughout the year such as the SU Ceilidh as well as the Blues & Colours Awards Ball. The VP of Events also sits on the Blues & Colours committee and Finance committee in a voting capacity.
The main duties are as follows:
- The President will delegate the responsibility of organizing the following events to the Vice President (Events). The Vice President (Events) must seek the approval of event plans from the President and then accept the responsibility for the delivery and success of these events.
- Responsible for the organisation and delivery of the Sports Union Dinner/Ceilidh.
- Responsible for the organisation and delivery of the Blues and Colours Ball.
- Any additional Sports Union event that fulfils the objectives of the Sports Union.

- To sit on the Executive and Blues and Colours Committees of the Sports Union in a voting capacity.
- To attend all sub-committees set up by the Executive and Council.

- Attend all SU events and assist at these events at the discretion of the President.

Secretary
The Secretary is responsible for all the SU records and communications throughout the year. As well as this the Secretary sits on the Blues & Colours Committee and the Finance Committee in a non-voting capacity and to record accurate minutes of said meetings.
Main Duties:
- To work with the administrative secretary and to keep a record of proceedings of Council and Executive committee meetings and, in the absence of the Administrative Secretary, finance committee meetings where necessary.
- Sit on the Executive and Blues and Colours Committees and finance committee in a voting capacity and keep a note of proceedings of the Blues and Colours and Executive meetings.
- To work with the administrative secretary to issue notice of all meetings.
- Attend all SU events and assist at these events at the discretion of the President.
- Attend any other relevant event at the discretion of the President.
- The Secretary will also be on hand to help executive members with their duties.
Communications & Promotions Officer
The Communications and Promotions Officer is to continually update the SU website as well as the SU social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram. The Communications & Promotions Officer will also publish BUCS results along with SSS and local league/recreational results. They will also respond to social media to social media tags/links to SU clubs and create promotional content for the SU.
The main duties are as follows:
- To update the SpAH Marketing and Communications Officer with all club details and other relevant information continually throughout the year at the discretion of the President for the website.
- Actively promote the SU on social media: Instagram and Facebook.
- Publish BUCS, SSS, local league, and recreational results.
- Create promotional material to promote Sports Union events.
- To update the fixtures and results weekly.
- To update any news article, club info, etc when required.
- Attend all SU events and assist at these events at the discretion of the President.
- Attend all SU executive meetings and SU council meetings.
- Attend any other relevant event at the discretion of the President.
- Write and distribute Penguin Post with advisory from the SpAH Marketing and Communications Officer.
Campus Sport Officer
The Campus Sport Officer is to work with the SU President and the Sports Development Officer to maintain and develop a recreational campus sport programme. They are also responsible for offering support to the Sports Development Officer in the development and delivery of the Campus Sport Programme. They also promote Campus Sport events and encourage SU clubs to get involved in the programme.
Main Duties:
- To work with the SU President and the Club Development Officer to maintain and develop a recreational campus sport programme.
- Along with the SU President taking responsibility for the organisation and delivery of the Campus Sport events with a minimum of four events year.
- Promote campus sport events and encourage sports union clubs to get involved and increase engagement in the wider university population.
- Attend all SU events and assist at these events at the discretion of the President.
- Attend any other relevant event at the discretion of the President.
Transport Officer
The Transport Officer checks each SU vehicle is road worthy via the SU’s Regulations and Requirements and is there to support clubs regarding the use of the SU buses. The Transport Officer also works along with SU staff and the SU President to ensure that each club’s transport needs are met, be that an SU minibus, Arnold Clark hire vehicle, helping process public transport reimbursement forms or hiring coaches!
The main duties are as follows:
- The post holder must be over 21, have 3yrs driving experience and no points on their license and hold a clean license, they also must have passed the Minibus test to fulfil this position. This can be at the discretion of the SU president.
- To check that each Sports Union vehicle is road worthy via the Sports Unions Regulations and Requirements. This is historically done on a Monday and Thursday (although not exclusively) in line with the SU Protocol.
- To archive forms, check and replenish bus folder.
- To drive the buses to and from the garage if required. This can be done at the discretion of the SU president.
- To attend all SU events and assist at these events at the discretion of the president.
- To attend any other relevant event at the discretion of the president.
- To be on hand to help executive members with their duties.
Finance Officer
The Finance Officer along with the SU President is responsible for Sponsorship for the SU as well as responsible for looking into sponsorship for Varsity. The Finance Officer also works alongside the SU clubs themselves to help give guidance and assistance with any finance related queries.
The main duties are as follows:
- Help get sponsorship for the SU.
- Work alongside VP Sport for Varsity sponsorship.
- Blues and Colours Ball sponsorship.
- Attend finance meetings (representing student voice with the President).
- Chair Finance meetings when the President can’t attend.
- Assist sports co-ordinator where needed.
- To attend all SU events and assist at these events at the discretion of the president.
- To attend any other relevant event at the discretion of the president.
- To be on hand to help executive members with their duties.
Eligibility
- Sports Union President
- Only students who have been members of an affiliated club for two academic years and have been a committee member of this club for 2 years may stand for election.
- Vice-President
- Only fully matriculated students who have been members of an affiliated club and sat on committee for one academic year may stand for election as Vice-President.
- Discipline
- Candidates with an unsatisfactory disciplinary record by the Sports Union, SpAH or Students’ Association, for misbehaviour or misconduct, may not be allowed to run for election. The decision will be made by the disciplinary committee.
- Electorate
- Only University of Dundee students who are matriculated members of a Sports’ Union club may vote in the Sports’ Union Elections.
