Visiting student electives in Medicine

Come and join us in one of the UK's largest teaching hospitals, for an immersive learning experience as a visiting elective student

We can offer final year medical students a placement of 4-8 weeks between 1 May and 31 August each year. There is a fee of £300 which is payable on return of an application form, which will be sent to you if you are accepted to carry out a clinical elective placement.

Additional fees

Students will be responsible for paying for their PVG clearance through Disclosure Scotland at a cost of £59, which should be paid directly to Disclosure Scotland. The Visiting Electives Team will guide you with this process and let you know how to apply.

Students will also have to pay for their Occupational Health Clearance, the cost of this is £57, rising to £58.25 from the 1 April 2026. The Occupational Health fee should be paid to the University, who will facilitate the clearance process for you. 

Note: these fees are payable in addition to the £300 application fee noted on this page.

International students taking part in visiting electives, will need a Standard Visitor Visa in order to undertake an elective placement at Dundee.

Accommodation in the Nurses Residences of the hospital is available on request.

There is no formal teaching programme. You'll will join in all the clinical activities and participate in teaching rounds, watch surgical procedures, case conferences, meet patients and shadow consultants who are experts in their field. This is an opportunity to experience being part of a team in an internationally renowned teaching hospital.
