This guide covers the essentials of managing your research degree, from the very beginning all the way through to graduation. It is intended for postgraduate researchers in all Schools and disciplines, and it is designed as a quick reference guide for you to use as you progress through your research degree. It is not intended to replace your welcome and induction events or the advice and guidance of your colleagues.

The value of your research degree for yourself and the research community is not captured in rules and regulations. However, it is important that each postgraduate researcher at our University has a good understanding of rules, regulations and responsibilities. It is also crucial that you know whom to ask for advice and support regarding your research degree.

You should read this guide alongside:

  • The Research Degrees Quality Code, which sets out the University’s standards for the quality of research degree provision;
  • The University regulations, which show detailed policy information about all aspects of your research degree;
  • Guidance and policies relating to your School, degree programme, and/or any funding bodies that are financing your degree.

Should there be any contradiction between this guide and the documents listed above, the University Regulations and Research Degrees Quality Code take precedence. Please report any errors or omissions to doctoralacademy@dundee.ac.uk.
