Teaching and assessment for Scottish Historical Studies with Spanish MA (Hons)

We use a wide range of teaching methods, from lectures to small group discussions.

Most history modules in Levels 1 and 2 have two lectures and one tutorial or workshop group each week. This may vary in Levels 3 and 4, where you will have fewer lectures and more small discussion groups per week.

Use of archives, both physical and online, will allow you to develop your research skills, including paleography (reading old handwriting), database analysis, project planning, and team work.

Study trips, including trips to local archives and museums, are an important part of the course.

The Spanish modules in Levels 1 and 2 have four hours of tutorials each week. In Levels 3 and 4 this changes to two hours of language tutorial each week, plus 10 hours of lectures/seminars on Spanish film, culture and society across each year.

In addition to language classes, you must attend regular film screenings or make appropriate alternative arrangements for viewing the films studied on the course.

Assessments for history modules are carried out by coursework and exams, and vary in type and weighting from module to module.

In Level 4 you will apply the skills you have learned to write a dissertation on a topic of your own choice.

Assessments for the Spanish modules can consist of:

• oral presentations and exams
• written assessments and exams
• grammar tests
• listening tests
• projects

In Levels 1 and 2 you'll also study additional humanities or social sciences subjects, such as economics, English, philosophy, or psychology.
