The MSci course combines Bachelors and Masters level modules of mathematics and physics.

Mathematics and physics are often interlinked, and as such are a natural combination to study together. You will gain a strong grounding in maths, so that you can understand the basic concepts of physics.

You will study both pure and application-driven mathematics. By the time you finish your degree, you will be able to use maths to solve practical problems. Computers are used extensively in modern maths and we will introduce you to various mathematical software preparing you for industry.

At the same time, you'll develop a deep understanding of physics, from astronomical phenomena to quantum mechanics. As the course progresses, you'll increase knowledge in classical physics as well as advancements in modern physics.

Much of what you will learn will relate to research that our staff carry out. This includes topics such as biophysics, advanced materials, photonics, numerical analysis, and applications of maths and physics to challenging problems in biology and medicine.

By undertaking the MSci, you will study in greater depth areas such as advanced electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, advanced fluid dynamics and stochastic processes.

Our Physics society run regular social events including organised trips to CERN, Munich and Amsterdam as well as the annual Physics Ball. They also offer excellent peer support to help guide you through the more challenging aspects of the course.
