Mathematics MMath (Hons)

Mathematics helps us understand patterns, model complex systems, and solve problems across science, technology, business and society.

At Dundee, our MMath combines pure and applied mathematics with research-led teaching and substantial project work. You'll move from established techniques toward increasingly complex, open-ended problems, culminating in a final year studied at Master's level where you'll explore specialist topics and complete a substantial independent project on an advanced problem of your choosing. During the course you will:

• develop core knowledge in algebra, calculus, geometry, statistics and probability
• explore advanced topics in pure and applied mathematics
• use mathematics to investigate practical and research-led problems
• build skills in mathematical computing, programming and advanced mathematical software
• learn to approach problems where the solution isn't immediately obvious
• learn from research-active mathematicians engaging with contemporary ideas

Mathematics in the real world

Mathematics isn't only about finding the right answer, it's about deciding how to approach a problem, building a model, testing assumptions and interpreting what the results mean.

At Dundee, you'll apply increasingly sophisticated mathematical and computational techniques to real, often unresolved problems. You'll learn to break down difficult questions, identify the right mathematical approach, test solutions and critically evaluate your results. These are skills used across research and specialist technical careers.

Maths at scale - Learning made personal

Mathematics helps us understand problems at every scale, from individual systems to challenges facing entire industries and societies. At Dundee, that learning is personal: you'll have regular opportunities to discuss ideas and develop your understanding directly with the academics teaching you.
Our staff are active researchers as well as teachers, applying mathematics to problems from cancer treatment and blood flow to machine learning, space weather and the behaviour of the Sun. This brings contemporary mathematical ideas straight into your studies.

Advanced mathematics - Advanced problem-solving

The MMath is for students who want to push further into advanced mathematics and develop the skills to tackle complex, less structured problems. As you progress, you'll take greater ownership of how you approach problems. You will learn how to select techniques, evaluate results and communicate conclusions independently.

In your final year, you'll undertake a substantial independent project in a specialist area, working closely with academic staff to investigate an advanced problem in depth.
