Applicants for this course should be aware that they are also applying for employment with the NHS and therefore must be eligible for employment in the NHS. This includes having appropriate personal qualities suited to employment in the NHS. Recruitment will be jointly undertaken by senior academic staff and NHS staff.

This is an NHS Scotland-funded training course designed to produce graduates with the qualification to work as Clinical Associates in Applied Psychology, an NHS Scotland role. There is no guarantee of employment following training, however previous candidates are undertaking several roles within and out-with NHS settings. These include Clinical Associate posts, Primary Mental Health Workers, and equivalent roles.

On successful completion of the course graduates are eligible to apply for these posts as well as other related posts. While specifically an NHS Scotland role, accreditation by the BPS and BABCP has increased the acceptance of this qualification in other parts of the UK.

Doctoral training programmes

NES will not fund places in the Glasgow or Edinburgh Clinical Doctorate Training Programmes for candidates who apply to the Clearing House while in receipt of NES funding for the MSc in Psychological Therapy in Primary Care

This means, if you apply and are in acceptance of a place on the MSc in Psychological Therapy in Primary Care for 2025, you would not be eligible to apply to the Clinical Psychology Doctorate at Glasgow or Edinburgh in the September to November/December 2025 application window for 2026 intake

“After qualifying from the course, I worked for over fifteen years in adult mental health services. During that time, I offered individual therapy as well as facilitating groups and psychoeducational classes. Initially I practised only CBT, and later took additional training in other therapy modalities. With increasing experience, I took on the role of supervisor for trainees on the MSc as well as supervising other therapists. I feel that the MSc was an excellent theoretical and practical foundation for my career in the health service. The potential to learn from and be guided by a range of experienced professionals was so valuable.”

John Wills, MSc PTPC graduate

“I graduated 17 years ago and since then I have worked in the NHS in adult mental health services. Over this time, I have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge and train in different psychological models including IPT and Mindfulness. I have also taken on supervision responsibilities for both trainee and qualified members of staff, and this is a role I particularly enjoy. I have always felt supported and encouraged to develop my career through involvement in a variety of activities including group work, research and training. The MSc training, with a particular emphasis on CBT, provided a solid foundation to develop my therapeutic career in the NHS.”

Lizzie Taylor, MSc PTPC graduate
