Dundee-born artist Sydney Jordan is best known as the creator of Jeff Hawke, whose fantastic adventures appeared in the Daily Express from 1954-75. Popular in the UK as the first regular science-fiction comic series to appeal to adults, the strip was even more highly regarded in European countries, where it had a significant influence on the development of science fiction and fantasy comics. This exhibition features a feast of original art from Jeff Hawke and more, revealing Sydney Jordan’s extraordinary skill and visual imagination.

Closed for Christmas 23 Dec – 2 Jan

PLEASE NOTE - DUE TO ELECTRICAL WORK TAKING PLACE IN THE TOWER, THE GALLERIES WILL BE CLOSED ON SAT 14 OCTOBER. WE APOLOGISE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.

Still Moving - An Evening with David Annand

Tumbler Falls by David Annand
Deer Leap by David Annand
Design and Art Public engagement

David Annand has been one of the most successful artists working in public sculpture over the past 40 years. He studied under Scott Sutherland at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 1966-72 and after several years teaching art in local schools, he became a full-time sculptor in the 1980s thanks to the success of his leaping deer at Dundee Technology Park. Since then he has created numerous works both locally (most recently the polar bear in Dundee High Street) and across the UK and beyond.

To celebrate his recent 75th birthday, we're delighted to welcome David to give an illustrated talk about his career and answer questions from the audience. The event accompanies our current motion-themed exhibition Still Moving (which includes the maquette for David's sculpture Tumbler Falls at Kingsway West). Many of David's most celebrated pieces feature people or animals caught in motion. David says: “Looking back at my sculpture you’d think I was obsessed with giving gravity a hard time and taking my materials to the limit. It’s easy enough to make life-like sculptures but by nudging them off balance in an awkward place – it makes them vulnerable, precarious; they get an urgency to be alive.”
