You will master thoroughly a wide range of structures of the Spanish language, be very familiar with Spanish-speaking cultures and communicate competently in Spanish in a wide range of complex informal and formal situations. This learning will be of use to you both in your personal and professional lives. You will work within the level of B2 of the Common European Framework for Languages.

Through recognising, understanding, and applying the main vocabulary and grammatical structures of Spanish, you will communicate competently across the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Skills in critical reading, listening and contextualised summary, conducting surveys and an individual written project will be developed. Examples of topics are publicity, tourism, geography and regional differences, historical events and political structures, current affairs, and contemporary social and cultural issues.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • understand and apply competently a wide range of complex linguistic structures in Spanish, showing deeper awareness of complex features of the Spanish language system
  • use a concise bilingual English - Spanish dictionary with ease
  • use new technology appropriately
  • show extensive familiarity with contemporary Spanish-speaking societies and cultures, discerning and evaluating subtle differences between customs and conventions and those of the UK
  • listen to, read, speak, and write Spanish effectively, and with attention to detail, in a wide range of complex formal and informal contexts
  • conduct independent investigative and analytical project work in Spanish, using a wide range of printed, audio-visual, and web-based resources
  • use language skills at a level of B2 as described in the Council of Europe Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR)

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate a high level of competence in complex features of the Spanish language across the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • demonstrate a high level of familiarity with key features of selected Spanish-speaking cultures
  • communicate very competently in Spanish, and with attention to detail, in a range of complex formal and informal situations

  • coursework (75%)

  • examination (25%): consisting of one 10-minute oral degree exam

To pass the module, both aggregate written and aggregate oral components of the assessment portfolio (i.e. written 50%; oral 50%) must be passed.
