In this module, you take control of your learning. You'll choose a physics or mathematics topic that is not covered elsewhere in your degree and study it in depth, developing new skills in independent research, technical problem-solving, and scientific communication.

You’ll enrol on a module offered by either the Scottish University Physics Alliance (SUPA) or the Scottish Mathematical Science Training Centre (SMSTC). You will develop a deep understanding of your chosen area. Then, you'll take it a step further by communicating what you've learned in clear, engaging ways to both academic peers and non-expert audiences.

This module is designed to prepare you for professional employment, where independence, initiative, and the ability to explain complex ideas clearly are essential. You’ll show that you can master a technical topic on your own, organise your work, and present your insights with confidence. These are highly sought-after skills in both industry and research.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • independently research a topic in physics or mathematics not covered elsewhere in your degree
  • build a structured portfolio including solved problems, an essay, and presentation materials
  • develop your ability to evaluate, synthesise, and explain complex technical content
  • improve your written and verbal communication skills for both technical and general audiences

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate expert understanding of a specialised topic through independent study
  • deliver a presentation that communicates advanced concepts to non-specialists
  • organise your learning into a professional portfolio of evidence

Assignments / assessment

  • Personal development portfolio (100%) – includes:
    • a technical essay
    • a short lecture or presentation
    • solved problems and learning materials
    • a reflective statement of learning
  • This module does not have a final exam
