In a mathematics work placement, you gain hands-on experience. You will be able to apply your mathematical knowledge in a professional environment. You'll work with an organisation in an industry such as finance, technology, research, or engineering. You will tackle real-world problems. You will make use of analytical and computational skills that you have previously gained in your studies.
During the placement, you'll likely engage in tasks like data analysis, mathematical modelling, or developing algorithms. This will allow you to see how mathematical concepts are used to solve practical challenges. This experience helps you refine both your technical abilities and transferable skills. You will develop skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
You’ll also have the chance to explore potential career paths and build professional connections. You will be able to enhance your CV with valuable industry experience. By the end, you’ll have gained a deeper appreciation of mathematics in action. You will also have also improved your readiness for future employment or research opportunities. This will bridge the gap between academic learning and professional application.
What you will learn

Assignments / assessment
- periodic reporting tasks
- a report or presentation completed after the placement has been completed
- a brief report from the work placement supervisor.
Teaching methods / timetable
No classes are scheduled due to the nature of this module. You will however be assigned an academic supervisor to provide support if needed.
