This module explores key concepts and theories developed by physical geography in order to interpret and understand landforms, water, and landscape evolution. You will focus on geomorphology, hydrology, and landscape and society in the Scottish Highlands.
 

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • be introduced to a systematic study of geomorphology and hydrology, emphasising principles and processes in each thematic area
  • understand the interactions between different Scottish Highland physical and social landscapes.
  • examine, collect and analyse data related to physical and human geography in the field.
  • be provided with a sound foundation course which prepares students for learning at more advanced levels.
     

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • provide a wide and systematic knowledge of geomorphology and hydrology, of their core principles, and of interactions between them
  • provide “hands-on” experience in the practical application of geographical knowledge and understanding through workshops and a residential field trip
  • develop skills in abstracting, synthesising, and analysing data from varied sources (written, spoken, cartographic, numerical, and observational)
  • understand the reciprocal relationship between a range of physical and social landscapes in the Scottish Highlands
