This module will equip you to operate safely within a bioscience laboratory. You will work, with appropriate guidance, on a range of practical protocols to successfully employ basic bioscience techniques.

What you will learn

In this module you will:

  • acquire skills in fundamental bioscience techniques, including spectrophotometry and microscopy
  • learn to follow written protocols and apply experimental approaches to explore biological concepts
  • understand laboratory hazards and risks
  • accurately record experimental data and analyse results using numerical and statistical methods
  • learn how to use electronic tools for data tabulation and analysis
  • develop problem-solving, record-keeping, and time-management skills
  • learn how to search the scientific literature
  • collaborate effectively within a group to meet set targets

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • feel confident working safely in a bioscience laboratory, operating safely with an understanding of relevant hazards and risks
  • apply some fundamental laboratory techniques, with confident use of spectrophotometers and microscopes
  • conduct laboratory procedures while accurately and reliably recording experimental data using precise methods

Assignments / assessment

  • coursework (100%)

The module is assessed by coursework consisting of computer-marked assessments and a portfolio assessment of your practical skills.

This module does not have a final exam.
