Teaching

Our teaching takes place in small groups and individual tutorials, led by experts in both disciplines.

At Level 4 you will study urban design strategies and tackle a complex integrated design project, creating design solutions from urban to detail scale, supported by architectural theory.

At Level 5, you will complete modules in urban planning as well as a design-led research project which will help you develop your knowledge in both disciplines.

Assessment

You will primarily be assessed through:

design projects - which draw together architectural and urban planning skills,
reports or essays - which examine architectural and urban design history and theory, contemporary management, practice or law

You will develop a complex integrated building design. This will range from understanding an initial brief to resolving technical details

Integrated Architectural Design full module details

Module code: AR41001 Credits: 30 Semester: Semester 1

You will learn what makes an existing city. You will explore how it has evolved and what may shape its future.

You will analyse, in depth, a specific place. You will then develop creative strategic design proposals. These will address the challenges and opportunities you have identified.

This studio-based module is integral to the Part 2 MArch (Hons) with Urban Planning course. This carries professional recognition from:

the Architects Registration Board (ARB)
Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI)

This leads to a jointly accredited award in architecture and planning disciplines.

MArch with UP Research Project full module details

Module code: UP51005 Credits: 20 Semester: Semester 1

This course introduces you to the complexity of developing buildings and infrastructure in cities.

You will learn about the different roles that are involved and the nature of challenges encountered in achieving the successful development of projects.

The objectives of property developers and the processes involved are explored.

Develop your understanding of the purposes of spatial planning and the contribution of statutory planning powers and procedures.

Develop your understanding of spatial planning in different contexts and across a range of planning issues.

Gain professional practice skills including analytical and decision-making skills, negotiation, mediation, and communication skills.
