Architectural Humanities 4 module (HT40003)
You will explore thinking through making. Your exploration will take you beyond the constraints of an architectural design project
You will learn about how architecture is a product of, and a tool for the investigation of, ideas. You will use creative research methods to explore complex architectural ideas. You will also develop a deeper understanding of the theoretical and historical basis of the discipline.
You will participate in a design research methods course. This will introduce you to the concept of design-led research. Both historical and contemporary examples of its application will be discussed.
You will also develop individual design research projects in self-selecting seminar groups. These projects are open-ended and speculative. They will allow you to focus on emerging individual interests and preoccupations. You will be able to examine in depth an aspect of contemporary architectural or urban theory and practice. You will do this through both making and writing.
What you will learn
In this module you will:
- learn about the ways that the histories and theories of architecture inform architectural design. You will also cover the broader cultural context
By the end of this module you will be able to:
- use analysis and appraisal of a wide variety of sources to generate, expand on and enrich a clear argument. You will also be able to critically reflect on your work
- speculate, test and communicate architectural ideas. You will be able to do this through a variety of appropriate techniques and media. This will be drawn from your understanding of architectural and fine art practice
- formulate a self-directed innovative design project or series of projects. These will be able to be synthesised as an architecture thesis
Assignments / assessments
- 2,000-3,000-word practice-led research project
You will work in thematic units defined by your unit teacher’s expertise and research interests
This module does not have a final exam.
Teaching methods / timetable
You will attend in a series of lectures on design-research methods:
Lectures will include discussions of:
- architectural design research and creative practice-based research more generally. This will cover elements of a research project. This includes objects aims context methods, questions; different forms of practice
- how to develop your own research agenda. This may lead to a manifesto-like statement of intent based on your critical reflection
- how to develop and sustain your own discourse (your principal ideas, agendas, priorities)
- how site selection and brief writing (narrative) are elements of research
- case studies of creative practice research in architecture and/or the visual arts
- drawing and modelling as process
- creative writing as part of the design process
As well as this, you will select a design research unit. This will align with your own research interests. You will also attend a series of seminars to assist you in developing your own practice-led research project. Your projects will explore thinking through making. You will choose to work with a number of different mediums, such as film, photography, drawing, collage, or casting.
