Studying medicine gives you a clear path to becoming a doctor, but what if you’d like the opportunity to study a specific topic in more detail or explore a more lab-based or theoretical area of medicine? This is where an intercalated degree could be of benefit.

With an intercalated degree you can spend a year studying a topic of interest. This allows you to:

  • become more informed about different options for your career post-graduation
  • gain new transferable skills, including research skills
  • get a deeper insight into a subject area that interests you

Orthopaedics is a vast field in medicine, and central to the treatment of patients in this area has been the technology behind many orthopaedic innovations. For example, twenty-five years ago there was only one type of artificial hip - today there are more than sixty. This rapid development has considerable implications for those working in the fields of orthopaedics, biomechanics, sports, and rehabilitation.

You'll understand the principles involved in the development and application of orthopaedic technology, orthopaedic biomechanics, and sports biomechanics. Many of our students have had the opportunity to present their research at conferences or have it published in peer-review journals.
