Teaching
Because hospitals run 24/7, so do nurses and this is reflected in our teaching.
You will work 37.5 hours a week, with shifts in your hospital and community placements. This may involve significant travel to get to some placements. If you are entitled to the SAAS student nurse bursary, you can claim back any travel expenses over £5 per day, if the cheapest route of travel is taken. If you are not entitled to the bursary, you are expected to pay your own travel.
The academic year for nurses is longer than other courses. It is 44 weeks long, meaning you get eight weeks of annual leave which is fixed for the duration of your course.
A typical week is made up of time spent in lectures, Clinical Skills Centre, small tutorials, and private study.
You will work together with students from all three fields of nursing, adult, child and mental health, and learn through a variety of methods including case-based learning, evidence-based learning, inter-professional education and clinical skills simulation.
Assessment
Assessment methods include portfolio development, essays, exams, and objective structured clinical examination.
For the BSc version of this course you are not required to complete an honours project or dissertation.
Practice placement performance is assessed by a registered nurse assigned as your mentor. They will support you in your practice learning and will spend at least 40% of your placement working alongside you.
