Professor Arpit Jariwala (Consultant Upper Limb and Trauma Surgeon/UDOTS Director) and Mr Malin Wijeratna (Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon, Northampton General Hospital) in conjunction with LockDown Surgical, ran the first Lockdown Acromio-Clavicular joint reconstruction training course in Dundee using Thiel cadavers at the Surgical Skills Centre on February 2nd, 2024.

The course was well-attended by Consultants and Shoulder Fellows from Europe, Ireland and the UK with attendees gaining hands-on experience of surgical procedures using Thiel cadavers. The Thiel method of embalming offers a novel and revolutionary experience of working with human material compared to other preservation methods by being highly flexible and retaining lifelike colour and consistency.

Professor Arpit Jariwala commented: “I’d like to thank Mr Wijeratna for his expertise and assistance, LockDown Medical for organising the course, the Surgical Skills Centre here in Dundee for hosting the event, and the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification for making the Thiel cadavers available. Judging by the attendees’ feedback (10/10 overall course rating), the course was a great success. I’d also like to state my gratitude to all those who generously and voluntarily bequeath their bodies to medical science for anatomical examination, research, education and training. Their generosity and pioneering spirit only go to benefit future generations.
