Palliative care in Mexico is often:

  • misunderstood as “end-of-life only”
  • associated only with cancer, and
  • delayed until very late stages of illness

Cultural taboos surrounding illness, dying and decision-making also limit early engagement with palliative care. As a result, many older adults and families miss opportunities for symptom management, psychosocial support, and improved quality of life.

By integrating global evidence with Mexico’s cultural and healthcare realities, this project will help expand access to earlier and more equitable palliative care, improving wellbeing for older adults and reducing preventable strain on families and health systems.
