Module code

PH50008

This module allows you to undertake a substantive physics project after completing a mathematics project in Level 4. You will be encouraged to show independence and a greater depth of understanding than in Level 4.

This will be an independent project with supervision provided. It will be laboratory-based, computational, theoretical, or a combination thereof, and will likely be embedded in an active research group.

Project topics include medical physics, microscopy, astrophysics, and computational biophysics.

While undertaking your project, you will apply the knowledge gained throughout your degree. You will also pick up and enhance the specific skills employers want in an employee.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • develop in-depth knowledge of an area of physics
  • plan and execute an independent investigation
  • design and test experiments or comparable tasks involving computational or theoretical methods
  • carry out appropriate ethics and health and safety assessments
  • develop your reasoning, time management, and research skills

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • present and defend your results at a poster presentation session
  • produce a substantive professional written final report
  • establish the collaborative working practices with colleagues needed for a successful career
  • present your project findings to your peers and academic staff

Assignments / assessment

  • individual dissertation project (100%)

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

Day-to-day project work is student-driven, however you will be assigned a supervisor who will guide you throughout your project. Weekly seminars will also give you exposure to a wide range of physics research.

You are expected to put in approximately 50% more effort in this module compared to your level 4 project.
