Biography

Dr Sarah Hendry is an academic lawyer specialising in water and environmental law. She is the Head of Dundee Law School. In that role she is involved in the design and delivery of the LLB and LLM programmes at Dundee.

Sarah also works within the Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science, which is hosted at Dundee. Her research interests in Scots, EU and comparative water law extend across both water resources and water services. Sarah is Scottish Editor for the Journal of Water Law and the Journal of Environmental Law and Management, and co-convenor of the UK Environmental Law Association Scots Law water topic group. She was a member of the Scottish Customer Forum, and of the Irish Government's Expert Commission for Water. She is Vice Chair of the Specialist Group on Governance and Regulation for the International Water Association.

Research

Sarah’s research interests cross over all aspects of national water law: legal frameworks for water resources management, water rights and abstractions, water quality and pollution control; and the regulation of water services. She has a special interest in water law reform. She works closely with scientists and policymakers, looking at the linkages between science, policy and law.

Sarah was a member of the Customer Forum, a new initiative in Scotland designed to better represent the consumers in the price setting process for water and sewerage services. She was a member of the Irish Government's Expert Commission on water. She has been involved in several funded projects for Scottish Government related to the regulation of water services, including rural supply, source protection and valuing water, as well as projects funded by the EU on water resource management.

Teaching

Sarah coordinates the Legal Research Skills for taught Masters students in Law and leads a Masters module on regulation of water services, looking at ownership, regulation, governance and price-setting to achieve social and economic objectives. She delivers teaching on a module in comparative national water law, focused on water resource management and water quality; and provides input on water law and health to students on the BMSci at Dundee. She shares delivery of an undergraduate module in Planning Law.

Sarah has always been involved in programme management, curriculum design and quality assurance, and continues with these activities as Head of Law. Law at Dundee offers both Scots and English qualifying Law degrees, as well as specialist LLBs with Languages and with Energy law. A suite of LLM programmes span commercial law, environmental law and international law specialisms.
