CE52029

This module covers the basic procedures and techniques used in conceptual design.

It emphasises a systematic approach and synthetic thinking in Civil Engineering. This applies to project planning, design, and execution.

It also considers the social, economic, and environmental effects.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • learn about conceptual design methods and their role in Civil Engineering project management.
  • learn about the importance of systematic approaches and thinking in this process.
  • learn the basics of engineering design. You will also learn about the relationships between the variables involved in delivering Civil Engineering projects
  • explore the role of the designer in providing sustainable and low-carbon design solutions
  • explore the influence of design on safe construction process in Civil Engineering works

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • analyse a design brief
  • carry out a feasibility study and risk assessment, and produce a range of design options and possible solutions
  • use digital tools in the conceptual design of engineering systems
  • use Standards to specify materials and inform design development
  • apply key laws, like the Construction Design and Management Regulations, to the design process. These include rules on disability discrimination and fire safety.
  • work independently and in small groups within the studio environment
  • identify and analyse problems within construction and establish solutions
  • communicate and present ideas and design thinking to peers and others
