Module code
CE40005
When steel experiences high stresses, it will pass beyond its elastic limit and deform plastically. Some approaches to structural design aim to maintain stresses below this limit.
However, there are often benefits in designing structures that allow for plastic deformation. This module will equip you with a more advanced understanding of structural behaviour beyond the elastic limit. It will also introduce the design of pre-stressed concrete.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
gain an understanding of application of limit analysis in structural design
learn about structural system behaviour
develop an understanding of the procedures involved in plastic design of framed structures
learn about plastic design of slabs
learn about the philosophy behind pre-stressed concrete and how such structural elements are designed
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
use the yield-line and Hillerborg strip methods for concrete slab analysis and design
use limit analysis methods for the sustainable design of statically indeterminate structures
design efficient prestressed concrete members
appreciate and evaluate the implications of design decisions
