This series of paintings act as visual reportage of the psychological and physical trauma caused by sexual assault and spiking.

About

rosie-nugent

A prevalent issue within universities, these paintings aim to address the multiple accounts of bodily violations experienced by my friends and colleagues, not only in Dundee but across all universities in Scotland. Throughout my time in art school, I have used my art as a form of reflection to explore the inner trauma caused by having one’s bodily integrity violated. I choose myself as the subject matter of these paintings in order to draw from my own experience of being spiked before starting at the university. My art expresses the feeling of exposure and vulnerability as well as the feeling of isolation often felt by victims which is illustrated through the use of solo figures in my work. One can see the bruising and scars as a visual demonstration of the suffering; however, the trauma runs deeper for the victim than that of their exterior wounds.

If you, or someone you know, has been affected by issues raised by this artwork you can access resources from the University of Dundee, and external organisations.
