Abstract micro photography of nature with accompanying sculpture that highlights the universal macro.

About

Profile photo of Gail Neckel

“I love nature. I have since I was a little girl – bottom in the air, head under a stone or sifting seashells in the sand. I’m totally happy, fulfilled and at-one, allowing myself to be fully present and absorbed with the ever-changing, re-creating process that is nature. I walk out of my home and nature’s creativity is right there in front of me and every day I am prompted in different ways to render its supremacy.

There is nothing complicated about my work, no hidden agenda to be discovered - it is what it is. Texture, pattern, colour, catches my eye and I capture what I see.
Through my artist’s lens, the intention is to share the detail of nature’s extraordinary beauty and creativity, that can easily be missed by many. I invite a viewer to look again, look closely. In studying this micro abstraction, it’s my hope the universal macro might also be appreciated.

I compliment the photography with sculpture, as I feel certain sculptural mediums can highlight the tactile textures a photograph cannot.”

The time spent at DJCAD has been very fulfilling. I have grabbed every opportunity to experiment with my ideas, through workshops, masterclasses and the benefit of being part of Dundee University. My dissertation has also brought together my prior experience as a holistic therapist and my studio practice, to find ways to use nature and creativity for wellbeing. As well as continuing to exhibit and sell my art, I look forward to furthering my dissertation research.

A blue back photograph with transparent tubular and planet shapes lined in white - universal ice.
A creamy mushroom range of colours with a donut shape lying under the surface of lots of bubble shaped ice - frozen droplets of rain.
A sky blue photograph with feather like veins sweeping over the surface in white. Between these veins are a myriad of small repeating patterns like a mosaic - paisley in ice.

I will also be having a follow-up solo show at the Garden gallery, Dundee Botanic Garden, later this summer - 24th June to the 9th July. During this fortnight, I will also be curating an interactive exhibition for the public, smARTphone + NATURE, which will have several botanical photographs placed around the gardens, encouraging visitors to use these creative prompts to make their own photographs, using their mobile phone.

A visitor can then choose one of their images to print out and after laminating, they will be displayed in the garden for the duration of the exhibition. For more information contact the Dundee Botanic Garden or visit their website.
