The Health Informatics Centre (HIC) at the University of Dundee is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Senior Research Infrastructure Engineer to join our growing Infrastructure Team to help design and deliver the next generation of our secure research infrastructure.

You will play a key role in building and evolving our Trusted Research Environment (TRE)-a secure platform enabling cutting-edge research using sensitive health and population data. This includes support for AI/ML, genomics, imaging, and large-scale analytics in a highly governed environment.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead technical innovation, influence architectural decisions, and shape the future of research infrastructure operating across hybrid cloud and on-premises platforms.

Your priorities will include:

  • Lead development of our Kubernetes-based TRE platform on AWS, evolving toward hybrid architectures.
  • Design, deploy, and manage infrastructure across local, private, and public cloud environments.
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform) and modern DevOps practices.
  • Ensure all infrastructure meets strict security, information governance, and ISO27001 standards.
  • Collaborate with researchers, data engineers, developers, and data specialists to deliver impactful solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance within the team.
  • Build and support custom configurations, including virtualised environments, containers, and hybrid cloud architectures.
  • Implement new technical capabilities including AI/ML support, HPC, bioinformatics, imaging and genomics pipelines, and scalable storage/compute solutions.
  • Contribute to the development of secure workflows for data ingress/egress, including algorithms and ML model export.
  • Provide technical support, troubleshooting, and problem-solving across infrastructure components.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both specialist and non-specialist stakeholders.

Who we're looking for:

  • Degree in computing, engineering, maths, or a related STEM discipline.
  • Expertise in Linux systems, containerisation (Kubernetes), and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Proficiency in scripting (e.g. Python, Bash) and modern DevOps toolchains.
  • Strong experience with cloud or hybrid infrastructure (AWS preferred).
  • Experience delivering secure systems handling sensitive or confidential data.
  • Solid understanding of networking, monitoring, and system reliability.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to varied audiences.
  • Experience deploying or managing server, cloud, or container-based infrastructure supporting production environments.
  • Understanding of secure cloud computing, information governance, and managing confidential/sensitive data.
  • Familiarity with Windows systems administration.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team. * Proactive, problem-solving mindset with the ability to take ownership of tasks and deliver to deadlines.

Desirable

  • PhD in computing, engineering, maths, or a related STEM discipline.
  • Experience with public cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP) or hybrid cloud deployments.
  • Background in HPC, bioinformatics or research computing.
  • Experience with genomics or imaging data pipelines.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker, and container orchestration best practices.
  • Knowledge of ISO27001 or other information security management frameworks.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git version control, and automation tools.
  • Understanding of RDBMS technologies (SQL Server, PostgreSQL).
  • Experience with monitoring systems such as CloudWatch, Prometheus, or similar.
  • Contribution to research projects or academic publications.
  • Strong interest in secure system design, root-cause problem analysis, and operational simplicity.
