Economics has been taught at the University of Dundee for 90 years. In that time, we have been able to follow the careers of our economics graduates. The breadth and range of careers that economics graduates have gone into is an incredible range, covering all sectors, all types of business, and many job roles.

In the recent graduate outcomes data, it shows around 30% of our economics graduates moving into financial and insurance sectors, 20% in professional roles which include things like accountancy, marketing, and advertising. With the remaining numbers going into other sectors like IT, education, health/social work, and manufacturing roles. It also shows that 89% of graduates in work or further study 15 months after graduating.

The majority go on to work in financial services and various parts of the financial sectors, banks, insurance, accounting firms, business advisory firms, investment, risk management, financial planning, data analysis, and portfolio management. This is for companies such as Deloitte, Brewin Dolphin, Aviva, Lloyds, Barclays, RBS, Allianz, EY, PWC, Artemis, AXA, and BlackRock, as well as smaller firms operating in these areas.

We can see graduates of economics carving out successful careers in marketing, sales, and business development, across all sectors and industries. And in other business support departments such as HR, recruitment, personnel, training/development. This is due to the wide and varied education.

Large numbers also choose to work in the public sector, local and national Governments, and third sector organisations. And numbers very much growing towards sustainability-related roles and other roles in environmental areas of business.

But many more, working in all types of job roles, including:

  • Climate Advisor in the Energy Industry
  • Primary teacher
  • CEO/Business Owner
  • Actor
  • Health and Fitness Consultant
  • IT Project Manager

And many more…

So, with the right attitude, an economics degree really does open many career options. Especially for those graduates that fill have filled their CV with other activities, clubs, societies, and volunteering.
