Teaching and assessment for Adult Nursing (Kirkcaldy) BSc

Because hospitals run 24/7, so do nurses and this is reflected in our teaching.

You will work 40 hours a week, with shifts in your hospital and community placements. This may involve significant travel to get to some placements. If you are entitled to the SAAS student nurse bursary, you will be able to claim back travel expenses subject to conditions. If you are not entitled to the bursary, you are expected to pay for your own travel. You can apply for a card to access the Young Persons’ (Under 22s) Free Bus Travel Scheme.

The academic year for nurses is longer than other courses. It is 45 weeks long and annual leave will be built into your programme instead of a summer break.

A typical week is made up of time spent in lectures, clinical skills centre, small tutorials and private study.

You will work together with students from all three fields of nursing, adult, child and mental health, and learn through a variety of methods.

The clinical skills centre, including two simulated wards, is in the Kirkcaldy Campus.

Assessment methods include portfolio development, essays, exams, and objective structured clinical examination.

For the BSc version of this course you are not required to complete an honours project or dissertation.

Practice placement performance is assessed by a registered nurse assigned as your mentor. They will support you in your practice learning and will spend at least 40% of your placement working alongside you.
