David Topping been awarded the highly coveted Best Engineering Prize at the Scottish Young Software Engineer of the Year Awards.

His Li-Busy app provides students with real-time updates on how busy different sections of the University of Dundee library are, allowing them to plan their visits more effectively. By offering a live overview of occupancy levels, the system aims to reduce overcrowding and create a more efficient study environment for students.

David said, “I’m incredibly honoured to receive this award and grateful for the support I’ve had throughout my time at the University of Dundee.

“The idea behind Li-Busy came from wanting to solve a real-world problem that I knew many students faced. It's amazing to see how the project has been received, and I'm excited to continue applying what I've learned as I begin my career in the tech industry.”

David, who graduated from the University's School of Science and Engineering in the summer, excelled academically and enhanced his skills throughout his studies. He gained hands-on experience with an internship at NCR Atleos, where he has subsequently gained a full-time position.

The Scottish Young Software Engineer of the Year Awards celebrate the brightest talent emerging from Scotland's universities.

Mike Crabb, Head of Computing at the University and David’s Honours project supervisor, said, “David’s journey highlights that with passion, determination, and the right support, the sky's the limit for young software engineers looking to make their mark in the ever-evolving tech landscape - and Dundee is the place to make this happen.”
