Pursuing a Master of Education (MEd) degree can further enhance professional development and understanding of educational theory and practice.

Holly studied PGDE Primary Education at the University of Dundee and now works as a Support for Learning Teacher at St Paul’s RC Academy in Dundee.

Speaking about her role at St Paul’s, Holly said, ‘I mainly teach maths to S1-S3 and even through to S5, although I have also taught English and French, plus a variety of skills for life, and even helping someone prepare for the Defence Aptitude Assessment, and the Royal Navy!’

Holly speaks about how teaching maths was unexpected, ‘Although I didn’t study maths beyond GCSE my primary background means I’ve got a strong pedagogical understanding.

‘Teaching maths in a secondary school wasn’t what I expected when studying for the PGDE, but Linda Lapere and Tara Harper certainly set me out on this path.’

Holly explains that her experience at Dundee, particularly working with Donna Dey, has had a lasting impact on her. She emphasises that the culture of the school she is part of is very important to her.

Professional learning is also important to Holly, who is now studying MEd Inclusive Education (Distance Learning) at the University of Dundee and has just started her dissertation.

Holly explained, ‘At St Paul’s, when I heard about the lack of a breakfast club, I started one up, and this has now extended into a tea club, supported by the charity Dundee Bairns. This initiative now supports over 200 pupils, plus parents, every day – and you can donate via the project crowdfunder

‘I’ve also secured £21,000 of support from the Tesco Fruit and Veg for Schools, giving pupils access to healthy snacks when they need it.’

Holly provides some advice for those considering an MEd, ‘If you are thinking about undertaking a Masters, I was lucky enough to have this partly funded by the school, so would recommend anyone thinking of similar to ask your headteacher.’

Speaking specifically about her dissertation project, Holly said ‘My project is focussed on mainstream teachers and how they use able plans (also known as individual learning plans). A key objective is to understand the challenges and provide some practical actions for the school, to benefit teachers and most importantly the learners.’
