Teaching

Prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students study together on this course.

You will be part of a group of fourteen students for the group classes. These will be the same students throughout the course. Group projects and weekly lectures will mix students from different classes giving you opportunities to connect more widely.

You will also self-study for around two hours a day using materials and tasks we provide.  For example, in class, you might study criteria used to evaluate written sources.  Then, for the following day you may be asked to source an academic journal to use for one of your assignments and to use the criteria to evaluate this article.

There is also a weekly lecture, and groups such as a travel club, cooking club, a yoga class or general discussion group are also options.

Our materials are designed using topics such as the United Nations sustainable development goals which gives a relevant and interesting context for student learning.

Your weekly total classroom hours are 20 hours, generally from 09:00 to 13:00 each day and a minimum of 10 hours per week of self-study are also expected.

Types of class

There are three types of classes, each with a dedicated teacher:

Academic Literacy

  • two-hour group class, five days per week
  • covering skills in academic reading, writing, critical thinking, and using academic sources

Academic Engagement

  • two-hour group class, five days per week
  • covering skills in listening effectively in lectures and classes, taking notes, speaking in seminars, and delivering presentations

Specialist English

  • a two-hour class, once per week
  • where students can use and expand their subject knowledge to tackle a real-world problem.  These classes will take place in the final 6 weeks of the course.

You will also have a weekly tutorial with your academic literacy tutor to discuss your progress and assignments.

Assessment

You will be assessed using portfolios tasks during the final eight weeks of the course.

You will need to show evidence of your learning and abilities in the four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
