Advanced Practice in healthcare is a level of practice rather than a specific area of speciality. Advanced Practitioners are highly skilled and experienced registered health professionals who:

  • work with a high level of autonomy
  • make high-level decisions independently
  • have the skills and knowledge to independently assess, diagnose, and treat people
  • have the authority to make clinical referrals, admit, organise investigations and discharge people from their care

This MSc Advanced Practice course will give you the opportunity to develop a well-rounded skills set that supports clinical excellence and leadership in contemporary healthcare.

To study this course, you must have a clinical supervisor and manager who support this agreement at the time of commencement. This will enable you to access appropriate clinical support and supervision. We will ask you to show this support when you apply for the course. This is achieved by providing a signed supervisor and manager form.

The course was developed in collaboration with expert clinical practitioners. It complies with Scottish Government requirements for Advanced Practitioners and Advanced Clinical Practitioners.

During the course, you’ll study a range of topics based on the four pillars of practice as defined by the Scottish Government:

  • Clinical Practice
  • Facilitation of Learning
  • Leadership
  • Evidence, Research and Development

Studying these topics will help you develop the knowledge and skills needed for roles in advanced practice or advanced clinical nurse specialist practice.

You will study a range of core and optional modules. The optional modules you choose need to be specific to your area of practice.

You will have a wide range of transformative learning opportunities throughout the course. This includes innovative simulation and case-based scenarios from expert clinicians within Scotland and through guest collaborations with international colleagues.

The course has strong links to our clinical partners. This helps to foster a supportive and collaborative community of practice.

You’ll learn in a hybrid and flexible way, helping with your work-life-study balance. Our academics work together to ensure you will feel fully supported throughout your learning. You will be allocated an Advisor of Studies who will provide support throughout your course. For each module, you will also be assigned an academic supervisor who can provide expert guidance on the module topics.
